Programme for Parents – More than Words

Our Speech and Language Therapists have developed a programme for parents called ‘More than Words’ to help children with social communication difficulties. The programme involves weekly sessions for parents to learn and develop strategies to support their children’s social communication skills. It would be particularly helpful for parents of children with diagnosed Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), possible ASD and children who struggle with friendships or social skills, such as turn taking.

The next ‘More than Words’ programme is planned for the summer term 2021. If you would be interested in taking part call the Speech and Language team on 0131 454 9544.

Remote Learning Feedback – Students and Parents

As challenging as the last few weeks were, Hawthornden would like to hear from families and students to learn something about your experiences! Your voice is important to us and it can help us improve how we teach and support everyone, remotely or in person!

Linked below you will find 2 forms, both are to collect your thoughts and feedback: one for students and one for parents.

As a reward for taking the time to tell us your thoughts, everyone who completes a form will be entered into a prize draw – you can win extra break time for your whole class! The more students from your class fill in the survey, the higher are your chances to win! Parents can win a voucher by completing the form.

P4-7 students can complete the form independently if they wish to. For P1-3 students should complete the form together with an adult or older sibling.

Click on the links below or copy and paste the links into the browser. When your child does the survey please ask them to sign into Glow and Google Classroom.

Anxiety Workshops for Parents

Anxiety Workshops for Parents

Experiencing anxiety and worry is normal and common in people of all ages. While we all experience anxiety sometimes, there are times when anxiety and worry can feel very difficult to manage and can have a big impact on really important aspects of our lives.

We would like to invite you to a specialist workshop for parents focusing on understanding anxiety in children and developing support strategies to help at home. This is particularly geared towards parents of children who are experiencing anxiety. The workshop has been designed by our local Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) and will be delivered by CAMHS staff via Microsoft Teams.

All parents are very welcome to join these workshops and we can support with technology if help is needed.  You do not need to register for these workshops, simply join the online workshops using the Microsoft Teams links. You can contact Miss Johnson at Hawthornden if you are interested in attending.

It is time to celebrate Red Nose Day at Hawthornden! There are lots of fantastic activities planned for the week beginning 15th March 2021: we are selling red noses (£1.50), having talent contests, telling our best jokes, doing quizzes and designing super heroes!

The Hawthornden community is special and we can make a difference. By taking part in this we are working towards making the world a better place.
